Toyota launches home energy storage system( ESS ) that can be powered by new energy vehicles
New battery system
Toyota Motor (TM.US) released a new battery system for homes on Thursday, which can combine the whole-house power system with solar panels, power grids, and new energy vehicles to provide a home power solution. It is used when electricity is used, which is similar to the Powerwall system introduced by Tesla.
Battery technology based on “years of electric vehicle development and on-board components and units” designed to power homes. The system began taking pre-orders on Thursday, while sales in Japan through domestic homebuilders and construction companies will begin in August
The company’s statement reads: “By being connected to a photovoltaic system, it can provide appropriate power during the day and night according to customer needs. Toyota believes that the use of this system will encourage the use of solar energy, a renewable energy source.
Unique system
The system is unique to Toyota, it supports electric vehicles (HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV) to supply power under 100V AC, and can use the power stored in the electric vehicle as a backup power supply in the event of a power outage, allowing users to live more at ease. Through the external discharge function of the electric vehicle, the energy storage equipment can be supplemented in an emergency.
New field focusing
Toyota has begun to focus more on electric vehicles and battery technology with the launch of its first mass-produced pure electric vehicle, the bZ4X, in April 2021.
Currently, Tesla, LG, and Enphase Energy (ENPH.US) dominate the home energy storage market. According to Tycorun Energy, the three companies have an 85% market share in the home energy storage space, with Tesla taking the lion’s share. In its home market, Toyota will also compete with Panasonic. Panasonic is Japan’s fourth largest home energy storage provider and Japan’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries.
