Starting from the introduction of liquid lithium batteries into the electric vehicle field by Tesla in 2008, traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries have dominated the power battery market for more than ten years.
The contradiction among energy density, safety requirements, cruising range, cost targets and liquid lithium-ion batteries is irreconcilable.
To achieve the energy density target of 500Wh/kg in 2030, a breakthrough at the solid electrolyte level is the only way that has to be taken.
Why must it be a solid-state battery?
First, the non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-volatile, non-leakage, high-temperature-resistant solid electrolyte replaces the electrolyte, electrolyte salt and separators, and completely solves the risk of spontaneous combustion caused by the flammable liquid organic electrolyte.
Second, the energy density of solid-state batteries is high, and there is great hope to break through the 500Wh/kg mark, which can increase the range of electric vehicles to 800 kilometers to 1,000 kilometers. In addition, the solid-state battery has a wide operating temperature range and supports super fast charging, which is the shortest keystroke to realize “power-on is more convenient than refueling”.
Third, solid-state lithium batteries can significantly reduce the weight of the system. Solid-state battery cells do not contain liquid and can be connected in series before packaging.
At the same time, because of its completely non-flammable characteristics, BMS temperature control components will no longer exist, and multiple measures will be taken to increase the cruising range.
Solid-state batteries, the closest milestone !
From the analysis of the technological latitude, solid-state batteries are the best way out for next-generation power batteries, the only way to eradicate the cruising range of existing electric vehicles, and the best solution for electric vehicles to replace fuel-burning vehicles.
But in the timetable for the landing of major automobile companies, whether traditional car companies or emerging car companies, the earliest time for solid-state batteries to appear is the fourth quarter of 2022.
At this time, the solid-state battery version of the electric vehicle with a cruising range of more than 1,000 kilometers will officially be on the road.
But this battery pack, which seems to be able to carry the banner of commercial mass production of “solid-state batteries”, is essentially just a transitional product under the final technical route. It has a new “semi-finished” name: semi-solid battery.
