Harmony Energy Trade Income (HEIT), a battery energy storage fund investment company, announced that Europe’s largest battery energy storage project has officially opened.
The battery energy storage project has an installed capacity of 98MW/196MWh, which can supply about 300,000 households in the area with two-hour backup power. The battery system is the Megapack product developed by Tesla for large-scale energy storage.
LiFePo4 Battery Cells
Megapack uses lithium iron phosphate lithium battery cells (Lifepo4), and the capacity of a single energy storage system is 3.9MWh. It is widely used in energy storage projects in Europe, Australia and other places.
At present, the supply of Megapack is in short supply. Tesla’s battery energy storage system Megapack order is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2024 at the earliest, and all previous products have been sold out.
Tesla’s 1.9MW/3.9MWh Megapack energy storage system is priced at US$2,627,210, and the unit price is about USD 0.65/Wh.
Production CapacityAn important driver of Tesla’s sales of energy storage products is the launch of its new Megapack factory in California, USA, which can produce about 40GWh of Powerpack energy storage systems per year.
Security Risk
However, Tesla’s Megapack products are a security risk.
On January 1, 2023, a fire accident occurred at the Baker Tesla Supercharging Station in California, USA. The fire started at Tesla’s mobile energy storage charging car.
Earlier, on July 30, 2021, in the Tesla Megapack energy storage system located in Victoria, Australia, due to the leakage of coolant, the high-voltage power device of the module generated an arc, causing the thermal runaway of the battery cell to deflagrate. 13 tons of lithium-ion batteries were completely ignited, and 15 local fire trucks and 150 firefighters participated in the firefighting. The fire lasted for 4 days before being extinguished.
Tesla Energy Storage
As a world-wide energy storage giant, Tesla has three independent energy storage products in addition to the Megapack developed for large-scale energy storage, namely Powerwall developed for household energy storage, Powerpack developed for industrial and commercial energy storage, and 4680 large cylindrical energy storage battery.
The Powerwall+ developed for household storage uses 2170 cells and is integrated with photovoltaic inverters to achieve integration of solar and storage. The capacity of a single energy storage system is 13.5KWh, and the grid-connected power is 5.8KW (continuous) and 7.8KW (peak).
4680 Cells
The annual production capacity of 4680 large cylindrical energy storage cells is 4.4GWh. In January this year, Tesla also plans to expand the annual production capacity of 4680 large cylindrical cells at the Nevada plant in the United States by 100GWh. The capacity expansion will strengthen the future certainty of 4680 large cylindrical battery technology.
Installed Capacity
In terms of installed capacity of energy storage, Tesla’s installed capacity of energy storage in 2020 and 2021 will be 3022mwh and 3.992MWh respectively. The annual installed capacity in 2022 will be 6.5GWh, a year-on-year increase of 64%. Among them, the installed capacity of energy storage in the fourth quarter will be 2.462MWh, a year-on-year increase of 152%
