CATL’s SX supercharged battery “on the car” next year. Ordinary models that support “charging for 10 minutes and a range of 400 kilometers” are coming to consumers.
On October 16, CATL announced that the 4C supercharged battery “SX Supercharge” will be installed and launched in Q1 2024.
10 minutes on a charge, 400 km range !
This launch will promote 4C ultra-fast charging batteries to gradually become standard products installed on ordinary models, increase the market share of batteries and materials, and drive the upgrading of charging piles.
At the end of 2023, SX supercharged batteries will achieve mass production as scheduled.
In Q1 2024, this model equipped with SX supercharged battery will be officially launched, at this time, only 2 months have passed since CATL officially released SX supercharged battery on August 16 this year, and the industrialization process of SX supercharged battery is consistent with the schedule previously disclosed by CATL.
In the future, Chery Group and CATL also plan to simultaneously promote SX supercharged battery models in overseas markets, explore the markets of Europe, the Middle East, ASEAN and North America, and jointly promote the early realization of global electrification and national carbon targets.
Range 700 km, full-temperature range, and high safety.
The model released this time has an ultra-fast charging speed of 10 minutes of charging and a range of 400 kilometers, and the new car will also have core battery performance such as long battery life of more than 700 kilometers, full-temperature flash charging, and high safety.
It is worth noting that this is another important launch of CATL’s new batteries, and in April this year, CATL’s sodium-ion battery was first launched.
In addition to commercial car battery supply and technical cooperation, the two companies will conduct joint research on public transportation, motors, electronic control, battery integration and battery swapping in the fields of buses, logistics vehicles, heavy trucks, and electric ships.
4C Supercharging becomes a hot spot again
SX supercharged battery is a lithium-ion power battery with “4C supercharged battery” as the main feature, which CATL characterizes as “the world’s first 4C supercharged battery that uses lithium iron phosphate material (LFP/Lifepo4) and realizes large-scale mass production”.
The advent of this product is another milestone in the history of power battery technology, which will accelerate the process of comprehensive electrification.
The so-called “4C”, that is, in 15 minutes the batteries can be fully charged, so 4C charging has also become synonymous with “fast charging”.
4C fast charging battery is the research and development focus of major power battery manufacturers in recent years, mainstream battery companies are focusing on fast charging battery solutions.
Kirin battery and 4C fast-charging
In addition, in the first half of this year, CATL also announced that it supports the installation of Kirin batteries with 4C fast charging. Among them, the 800V high-voltage fast-charging EV solution improves energy efficiency while increasing charging speed, allowing users to obtain higher charging efficiency and longer cruising range in various environments.
Low cost boosts new technologies
In addition to the eyeball-catching charging speed of “charging for 10 minutes, 400 kilometers of range”, “lithium iron phosphate” is also another keyword that the industry pays attention to
In the long term, car companies are more willing to launch differentiated competitive products, and 4C fast charging technology is expected to occupy a considerable market share.
Prespect
Unlike Kirin batteries that use ternary lithium battery materials, SX superchargeable batteries use lithium iron phosphate materials. This will lead to a significant reduction in battery costs and realize the popularization and application of supercharging technology in ordinary models, which is also known as “technological equality.”
In addition to battery manufacturers and EV manufacturers benefiting from the promotion of supercharging technology, the upstream materials and terminal charging links in the power battery industry will also be upgraded.
High-voltage fast charging requires coordinated upgrades of batteries, EVs, charging piles, and power grids.
The utilization rate of batteries and materials will first increase rapidly. Among them, the application of batteries and battery materials related to high-voltage fast charging will be the first to increase, followed by high-power charging piles and 800V high-voltage EVs.
However, CATL also reminds that the application scale of 4C fast charging technology is not only determined by the battery, but also depends on the model planning of the car company.
