Batteries used in energy storage are typically made from one of three chemistries: lead-acid, lithium-ion, and salt. The most commonly used solar energy storage battery today is the lithium-ion LFP battery. In most cases, lithium-ion batteries are the best choice for solar panel systems due to their superior overall performance, although other types of batteries may be cheaper.
Using solar power means taking advantage of cheaper electricity. Having solar panels and battery energy storage systems can also provide cheaper electricity rates at night.
When the solar panels fully charge the energy storage battery, the charge controller prevents overcharging by exporting the excess power back to the grid in a grid-tied system, or redirecting it to unload loads such as thermal units.
