Cathode Materials for Li-ion Battery Manufacturing:
- Cathode materials are the main components of lithium-ion batteries; they determine the energy density of the battery through the battery voltage and/or capacity. Lithium ion batteries are generally based on intercalation/deintercalation compounds, in which lithium ions provided by the cathode are inserted into the host lattice (anode) during charging and extracted during discharge, with minimal structural changes in the host material. The choice of cathode material with specific chemical properties depends on many factors, including battery voltage, capacity, energy and power capabilities, cycle life, and operating temperature.
- There are multiple cathode materials to choose from including: Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA), Spinel-based lithium-ion (LMO), Cobalt-based lithium-ion (LCO) and Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM or NMC). Due to its rareness, cobalt is gradually being substituted out partially with nickel (NMC, NCA). Cathode materials require extremely high purity levels and must be almost entire free of unwanted metal impurities – notably iron, vanadium and sulfur.
